The name Meenakshi is, all of a sudden, on everybody’s lips. The Meenakshi referred to here is the name of the character played by Kerala-born Sreeja in the popular television serial Saravanan Meenakshi on air on Vijay TV for the past many months now.

Looking picture-perfect and fulfilling every youth’s dreams of an ‘ideal girl’, Sreeja has starred in a few films before starring in the serial. She shared her experience about the immense popularity the serial enjoys and the clamour among her fans to talk to her wherever she goes. “I learnt classical dance when I was 7 years old and starred in my first Malayalam film when I was in Class V. I did a few films in Tamil including Sagodharan Sagodhari and Vaal Kannadi.

“Director Jerald was looking for an appropriate heroine for Madurai tele-serial when he spotted me. Jerald then decided that I was the one who would perfectly fit the role in the serial. I then started starring in many serials and Saravanan Meenakshi has given an entirely new identity to me. People talk to me and speak in a very good manner to me. I love all the attention I’m getting and enjoying it.

“I love playing negative roles but am not offered such roles. Whatever money I’m paid for my roles in films, nothing would convince me to do glamourous roles. I’d always do family-oriented roles and would love to earn the tag of a ‘substantial actress’ in future,” concludes Meenakshi alias Sreeja.
